Disasters cut fruit and veg supplies

Supplies of fruit and vegetables to supermarkets have been heaving impacted by the bushfires which have ravaged Victoria, as well as the widespread flooding in far north Queensland.

Woolworths general manager for fresh foods, Michael Batycki, warned that salad vegetables will be difficult to obtain.

"Fragile leaf vegetables like spinach and rocket have been also badly affected and we will see some shortage in some of those products, probably about 40% of supply at this stage," he told ABC radio news.

"Items like mushrooms, they're being affected as well by the heat, they will take a little bit more time, probably another four weeks or so.

"It's really item by item that we need to asses this.

"Banana prices in the wholesale markets in Brisbane have now doubled to $50 for a 13 kilo box, because floods are stopping the fruit getting from from north Queensland."
