Kangaroo meat ban fall out

A kangaroo meat processor from Queensland is due to meet Russian officials in Sydney this week to find out more information on a ban placed on kangaroo meat imports.

Russia announced the ban last week because of food safety concerns.

Jodie Cronin from Wild Game Resources in Longreach says almost 100 per cent of its meat is sold to Russia and the company has been forced to close the local abattoir from today.

Cronin says about more than 50 people have lost their jobs and no-one knows how long the plant will be closed.

She says the Queensland facility sends around 30 tonnes of kangaroo meat to Russia each week and a permanent closure would be a huge loss.
