Beverage manufacturing has been added to a second list of ‘Injury Hotspots’ released by WorkSafe Victoria to help employers and employees make workplaces safer.
Injury Hotspots are identified through five years of Victorian workplace injury insurance claims data to provide a snapshot of how workers are hurt and how to prevent injuries.
The interactive website allows users to click on individual hotspots and identify the areas of the body most at risk.
Spinal injuries were the most common injury for food and beverage manufacturers making up 21% of claims, followed by open wounds and lacerations to the hands and fingers at 16%.
WorkSafe Victoria executive director, John Merritt, said the named industries may not produce many fatalities but they significantly contribute to the approximate 30,000 workplace injury claims in Victoria each year.
“Knowing the hazards in your industry and workplace is the first step toward preventing injuries and the associated personal and business costs,” he said.
“The accompanying safety solutions represent the typical expectations of a WorkSafe inspector and provide clear easy-to-follow benchmarks for achieving safety.”
