The 2008 Environmental Protection Agency's Industrial Eco-efficiency Award, for outstanding performance in environmental best practice was won by Buderim Ginger.
"The awards highlight the importance of the Bligh Government's Toward Q2 vision of promoting a strong, smart and green Queensland," said Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation Minister, Andrew McNamara.
"They showcase business leaders, companies and technologies that have set new benchmarks in the standards of environmental performance.
"The awards recognise Queensland-based companies that are incorporating environmental sustainability into their everyday business operations," McNamara said.
"Buderim Ginger's innovative approach to eco-efficiency has lead to the development of state-of-the art technologies that set a high standard for other businesses on the Sunshine Coast."
According to the Minister, the Queensland Government is committed to helping Queensland business and industry develop technologies that reduce environmental impacts.
Buderim Ginger has implemented new technologies to significantly reduce its water use and gas consumption.
As part of the production process for producing its many dried ginger products, the company has developed a system that uses ozone instead of hot water to remove sulphite, allowing wastewater to be recycled.
The system has saved Buderim Ginger around 330,000 litres of gas, 30,000 litres of water, 18,000 litres of wastewater, and is anticipating further savings in 2009.
Eight outstanding Queensland environmental business projects were named winners at the third annual Environmental Protection Agency Sustainable Industries Awards.
"These companies demonstrate that sustainable practices can deliver enhanced profits and significant market advantages," he said.
"The impressive quality of all the entrants highlighted the effort being made by many businesses to profit from innovation while doing the right thing by the environment."
